Nataliya Yakushev asked:

The best way to manage your credit responsibly and take charge of your financial situation is to be informed. This takes a little time and effort on your part, but since your credit scores are so important to managing your finances and saving money, it’s your responsibility to know as much as you can about the credit bureaus that formulate credit ratings. To help you get a running start on that mission, here’s some information on TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, the main credit bureaus in the U.S.:

TransUnion

TransUnion has offices across the country that deal with different aspects of credit: credit management, identity theft, and other credit problems; and types of credit clients, such as personal, business, and press inquiries. If you find errors on your TransUnion credit report, you can call them at 800.916.8800 or visit their website to dispute them. If you think that you’re a victim of identity theft, call them at 800.680.7289 as soon as possible.

Experian

Like other credit bureaus, Experian offers a wide range of different services for people, businesses, and the media. Experian is based in Costa Mesa, CA, and has a website, but if you find errors on your report or need to report a possible identity theft, this credit bureau makes it hard to find phone numbers on the site. Instead, they encourage visitors to use online forms for disputes, identity theft reports, and other issues.

Equifax

Based in Atlanta, GA, Equifax also has different departments to assist people with different types of questions and concerns. Their website is also set up to have people use online forms to address errors, report identity theft, and handle other concerns. However, if someone thinks that his or her identity has been stolen, he or she can call 888.397.3742 to report it to Equifax. If someone spots an error on his or her Equifax credit report, that person must use the contact number on the report to dispute it. There is no number on the site to report errors.

These are the three credit bureaus in the country, and they each take a different approach to allowing people to contact them to ask questions or address any issues they may be experiencing. Instead of contacting the credit bureaus directly, many people prefer to use a credit monitoring service to help them manage their credit and stay on top of their finances. The credit bureaus all have similar programs, but most folks prefer to use an independent company to help them with these matters. That way, they get an impartial view of their credit score and many more tools to proactively manage and improve their credit ratings!

Karl

Hector Milla asked:

Most of your needs with a credit bureau can be done over the internet with their websites. However, if a problem arises with your report or certain information is not accepted by the site, you will need to make a phone call. It is a good idea to be able to find the phone numbers of each bureau quickly if you need them in order to get the matter settled as fast as possible.

Transunion 1-800-916-8800

TransUnion is one of the big three credit bureaus that allow for one free report every year. TransUnion was a pioneer in the field, although they were not the first established. TransUnion had the first online database and lead the way for online credit reporting. Now, most reporting is done online. TransUnion has had some troubles though, particularly with a high number of inaccuracies in reporting. One study showed that 79% of their reports had at least some form of inaccuracy. They also were sued for selling private information.

Equifax 1-800-685-1111

Equifax is the oldest of the three credit bureaus. It is also the most widely used. This means that people looking to repair their score will often work with Equifax first. They have had issues in the past when it came to privacy and giving out personal information. Because of this trouble, they have worked closely with government officials to make sure the current privacy laws are relevant and are working for the people.

Experian 1-888-397-3742

Experian is the only agency that does not use the FICO score to establish your credit score. Experian uses the PLUS system. The PLUS system uses the same factors as the FICO score. They weigh the factors a little differently and in a way that is more consumer friendly. They may be the easiest bureau to approach when attempting to fix your score because they are trying to get an accurate reflection of what is going on. Their major trouble with the law came when they tried to automatically enroll people who came for a free credit report to their paid monitoring service.

These three credit bureaus will give you one free credit report each year. There is a lot you can learn from these reports and everyone should take advantage of this great opportunity. For those trying desperately to raise their credit score, it might be a good idea to try out a paid monitoring service, at least for a few months. This way, you can see exactly which of your efforts are paying off and effecting your score. Even those with good credit would benefit from credit monitoring in order to catch fraud. Either way, be sure to get your free reports.

Jessica

Hyder Khan asked:

Did you know that by law, every person in the United States is entitled to request one free credit report every twelve months, from each of the three credit bureaus?

All you have to do is contact each one and either send them a request by mail or fill out the required form on their website, and upon verification of your identity and verifying that you have no checked your credit report in the last 12 months, they will mail (or e-mail) you your credit report.

All financial planners unanimously agree that you should check your credit report regularly, so that you can proactively be aware of what is on it and take the positive steps necessary to improve your credit score.

The three major credit bureaus are: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union.

Above and beyond that, there are many credit monitoring services out there that offer a variety of different services:

Multiple credit checks throughout the year Alerts to inform you when your credit score has gone up or done Alerts to inform you when something negative has come on your credit report Analysis of your credit report along with advice on how to improve it

It can be to your advantage to subscribe to such a service. For example, if you are planning to buy a house in the upcoming months or years, and your credit score needs improvement or you are simply trying to maintain it, then this type of service can help you to stay on top of your situation.

Philip

Zach Ford asked:

Because of recent laws passed by the Federal Trade Commission, all major credit reporting agencies in the United States, including Equifax, TransUnion, Experian (formerly TRW), are required to provide consumers (that’s you!) with a totally free copy of their credit reports, if requested, up to once every 12 months. This means that you can acquire a 100% free credit report from any of these three major credit reporting companies once every year. It has never been easier or cheaper to stay on top of your credit report and score than today.

Everyone should check their credit report! It’s FREE

There really is no good reason why you shouldn’t check your credit report, at least once a year. Knowing what is in your credit report and your credit score can save you time and money when shopping for a loan or lease. Also, it is an excellent idea to frequently check your credit report for errors, out of date information, fraud, or identity theft. All of these wrongful entries can negatively effect your over all credit score, tarnishing your reputation and relationships with banks and lenders.

All three of the major credit reporting agencies can be contacted for a free annual credit report by going to their official website: http://www.AnnualCreditReport.com. They may also be contacted individually, online or by regular postal mail; however, be aware that when going to one of their individual websites ( http://www.experian.com, http://www.equifax.com, http://www.transunion.com ) they will require you to also sign up for an account and other services to receive your credit report. So your best bet is to not deal with them through their commercial sites, and instead use the http://www.annualcreditreport.com site.

How Do I Get a Free Online Credit Check?

Viola

Gary Gresham asked:

Understanding credit report scores is important when you see your credit report because you need to be able to make some sense of it.

Your credit score is used by anyone loaning you money such as credit card companies, home loan lenders, auto loan lenders and finance companies. They all use your credit score to determine your credit risk. The interest the lender charges you is based on your credit risk. So you can see how understanding credit report scores is information that can save or cost you money.

You need to find out what your credit score is before you talk to any lender in case there is something on your report that you may question. You don’t want the lender to find a mistake that you aren’t aware of. If you find a mistake, it takes at least 30-60 days before you see corrections in your credit reports and scores.

You have probably heard that checking your credit will bring down your score. But checking your own credit report and score is counted as a “soft inquiry” and doesn’t harm your credit score at all. Only “hard inquiries” from a lender or creditor, made when you apply for credit, will bring your credit score down a few points.

Your credit report should have the three main credit services Experian, Trans Union and Equifax and each service will give you a different credit score.

The credit scores will range between 300 and 870 with each credit service giving a different score. The higher your score is the better, because as your credit score increases, your credit risk decreases.

The average high approval score where the best interest rates are offered is 680 or above. The credit score the lender uses comes from the middle score or an average of all three scores is sometimes used.

Don’t be surprised if you find an error once you get your credit report. Statistics show that 70 percent of credit reports contain serious errors. Those errors are what you want to clear up because they will affect your credit score.

If you find a mistake, you have the right to dispute the information free of charge. Contact the credit bureau that provided the information and dispute the inaccurate information.

Below are the names, addresses, phone numbers and web sites of the three credit bureaus TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.

Equifax Credit

P.O. Box 740241

Atlanta, GA 30374

Equifax 800-685-1111

http://www.equifax.com

TransUnion

P.O. Box 1000

Chester, PA 19022

Trans Union 800-888-4213

http://www.transunion.com

Experian

P.O. Box 2002

Allen, TX 75013

Experian 800-682-7654

http://www.experian.com

You can also contact the creditor direct and ask that the corrected information be provided to the credit bureaus.

If you suspect any fraud, contact all three credit bureaus immediately and place a fraud alert on your report. Then, contact your credit card companies and bank to protect your accounts.

Understanding credit report scores and checking your credit report at least once a year will keep fraud in check and keep your credit score safer.

Copyright

Tony Banks asked:

Your Equifax credit score is probably the most popular of the three main credit bureaus. The other two are Transunion and Experian. Some lenders look at all three scores when making a decision to approve you for a loan but working on one score usually affects the others as well.

The strategy to boost your Equifax score will depend on the current state of your credit report. If your credit report has a few recent negative items such as charge-offs and collection accounts you want to challenge these items with the credit bureaus to have them deleted from your reports.

The more recent a negative is on your report, the more damage it will do to your scores. If a challenge is unsuccessful you can take another approach. This would be to deal directly with the creditor or collection agency. Just about all collection agencies have one main purpose which is to get paid.

Third party collection agencies usually buy the debt from the original creditor at a fraction of what the original price which means that you can negotiate a lesser amount to pay them to settle the debt. REMEMBER that you are doing this to boost your credit scores so in exchange for coming to an agreement with them you will ask them to delete their entry on your credit report.

On the other hand, if you have a fairly okay credit score and you want to boost it, your approach would be to strength the credit that you already have which can be done by paying down high balances on your credit cards as well as opening a new credit account to add to your available credit IF you don’t already have too many credit cards or revolving accounts.

Lewis

Tony Banks asked:

The process of cleaning bad entries from your file is very doable so long as you stick to the rules. Yes, there are rules guiding this process and you can achieve significant improvement on your credit rating if you really follow the procedures.

You’ll be needing a good understanding of how to handle bad accounts such as collections, charge-offs, foreclosures, late payments, court judgments, inquiries and even wrongly spelt names and addresses. You want to be sure you’re doing it the right way, else your effort might be wasted. This is where your restoration kit comes in handy. It is a document that is used by many consumers across the country to clean up negative accounts from their credit files when they switch into a self-help repair mode. It is also known as a do-it-yourself technique. It is the alternative method to hiring an expert repair agency to help in restoring your file.

Some of the things you’ll learn to clean up negatives on your file include the laws of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act among others. This is what the repair agencies can recall without consulting the books and one of the reasons they are considered experts in their job.

To erase negative items from your report, you’ll be drafting letters and sending them to bureaus as part of a dispute process if there’s any account on your report that is believed to have been a mistake of the bureau. However, some mistakes could originate from the information furnisher that sends info to these bureaus. In this case, you’ll discover that even though a bureau may notify you that the negative account on your file is correct upon conclusion of their investigation, repeating the same dispute procedure with the original creditor (or information furnisher) will solve the problem.

Linda

Matt Triplett asked:

You can’t fix a problem until you know what it is right. A majority of all Americans have never ordered their own report and half of those have never seen their own report. The scary part about that is according to studies 79% of all credit reports have errors and 25% of those errors are severe enough to deny you credit. So even though you pay all your bills on time every time, there still could be something on your report that isn’t even yours. Even if you have never been denied credit, these errors could be causing you a higher interest rate.

There are 3 major credit reporting agencies in the United States.

Experian Equifax Trans Union

Creditors submit your payment history to 1, 2, or all 3 bureaus each month. So depending on which creditors are reporting to which bureau, you should have 3 different scores. You can usually get a 3-in-1 credit report that shows all 3 bureaus along with an average score from all 3.

There are several ways to get a copy of your credit report. Order each one directly from the bureaus websites. If you have been denied credit recently you are entitled to a free credit report, that you can order from the bureau directly. If you have applied for credit recently from a local creditor, they can give you a copy if they have ordered it. Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com This is a government run website that will give you a free report from each credit bureau each year. Order a 30-day free trial of credit monitoring and get a free copy of your reports with it. Just make sure you cancel with in 30 days or you will be charged for the monitoring.

Some reports are harder to read than others. Usually a 3-in-1 credit report from a monitoring service is more user friendly and better laid out. Now you need to review all the information on your report and make sure it is accurate. This includes all the personal information, inquiries, accounts, former names, former addresses, employment, and so on. Having an accurate report is the best way to assure you a fair judgment on your payment histories.

William

Bill Pratt asked:

Freecreditreport offers online credit reporting resources to consumers worldwide and belongs to the ConsumerInfo family. The company is a leading provider of online consumer credit reports, credit information and monitoring services as well as credit scores.

The company has served 3.1 members thus far and delivered more than 20 million credit reports. The indispensable services and befits offered by Freecreditreport has taken the company to newer heights as the membership count continues to rise.

Consumers can now wield control over their credit by taking advantages of the services offered by this company. The first step involves getting access to their free credit report and credit score. Customers can try these services completely free of cost with the 7 day free trial offer.

The features and benefits also include:
Daily monitoring of Experian, Equifax and TransUnion credit reports
Email reports of any kind of changes and risks of identity thefts to any of the three credit reports
$50,000 Triple Advantage Guarantee feature offered the company

The paid membership comes with access to unlimited Experian credit reports and credit scores.

Monitoring and analyzing the customer’s credit score can result in substantial savings as these credit scores are taken into consideration by lenders for the “credit worthiness” of customers in order to facilitate processing of loan application, credit card application and other lines of credit. This credit score in turn helps in determining whether the applicant qualifies for a credit or not as well as the interest rate applicable on the given credit.

These credit scores are extracted from the credit reports which have a propensity to change on a daily basis. It therefore becomes imperative to monitor your credit reports as this could directly affect the credit scores.

Freecreditreport takes care of all these intricacies for its customers/members while obviating the any associated risks in terms of unauthorized activity or potential discrepancies. Customers also get to guard their identity, as Freecreditreport monitors the customer’s Experian, Equifax and TransUnion credit report on a daily basis.

It is important for the customer to note here that higher credit scores equate to lower interest rates on new loans, thereby resulting in substantial savings.

Eric

Tony Banks asked:

This is a good question, and the short answer would be all of them! Let me explain… The first thing you have to understand is that a lender that is looking to extend you cash would always find a way to check out your creditworthiness and they do so by turning to one of the three main bureaus.

The problem is that you don’t know which one of them they turn too! So if you spend time only fixing your Equifax credit report, (most popular agency) the lender might turn to transunion because they already have a business relationship with them.

In this case all the negatives accounts that you spent time cleaning from your Equifax report will be useless because the lender is looking and your Transunion report where each of the negatives still remain.

Your best bet would be to work on all three simultaneously. If you are fixing your reports for a mortgage loan, attacking all three is a must because the mortgage banks will request a copy of each of your files before making a decision on your home loan.

Annualcreditreport dot com is still the best place to obtain a copy of each of your three files. This is the website that was created thanks to congress where consumers can get a copy of their reports once a year without having to pay.

The process of improving your files begins with you disputing negative items on your report. This is also your right according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the respective bureaus need to respond to your dispute within thirty days.

Christopher
